[Mission Day 01 - 1440 Hours]

There was an almost imperceptible vibration through the deck plating as Apollo moved directly from impulse power to warp nine. Chief Engineer Tanner gently patted the console he was using as if to reassure the ship that everything was alright.

To his left, at the intermix monitor station, Lieutenant Ballasan Ral growled under his breath.

"Problem?" Tanner asked.

"I just wish the captain wouldn't just jump to high warp like that," Ral complained. "It puts too much strain on the EPS network. One day soon, we're just going to short out the whole grid..."

Tanner half-turned towards Apollo's Third Engineer, pushing his black baseball cap back on his head. "Alright. Let's just cover off a few things here... One - we're hunting Breen, so we've got to be fast on our feet. Two - if anything does go wrong, we can fix it. That's why we're here. And three - he's the goddamn captain. He can do what the hell he likes. And if I ever hear you talk disparagingly about him again in front of the crew, you and I will be having serious words in private." He looked directly at Ral for the first time. "Do we understand each other, Lieutenant?"

Ral looked crestfallen. "Aye, sir. Sorry, sir. It won't happen again."

Tanner grinned. "Glad to hear it."

Apollo's Cardassian Fourth Engineer, Ensign Toral Jorek approached with a concerned expression on her face and a padd in her hand. "Commander?"

"Ensign? What's up?" Tanner greeted her. Jorek held up the padd so that the older officer could see the screen.

"At the beginning of that last engagement, there was a delay of point-two-five seconds in reloading the forward torpedo launchers. By the end of the engagement, the delay had increased to point-four-seven seconds. Not a huge delay, but..."

Tanner nodded. "But it's getting longer. Computer - activate the Long-term Engineering Hologram."

There was a shimmer in the air and the diminutive figure of Apollo's LEH materialised in the centre of main engineering.

"Please state the nature of the technical requirement," she said in a matter-of-fact tone.

Jorek spoke first. "Polly, we have a delay on the forward torpedo loaders which appears to be getting worse. Can you investigate and let me have your thoughts please?"

The LEH - Apollonia, or 'Polly' for short - tilted her head and looked to Tanner with an expectant expression. "Commander Tanner. Do you wish me to investigate?"

"I do, Polly. And Ensign Jorek is an engineering officer too. You don't need to always double-check things with me first."

Apollonia smiled and nodded. "Of course, Commander. I shall investigate," she said before vanishing.

"Why does she do that?" Jorek asked with evident frustration. "She won't take orders from anybody except you!"

Tanner laughed. "She's unique. When we put into port for more than five minutes, I'll pull her program and see what I can find." He shrugged. "Until then, we'll just need to deal with it I guess." He gestured to Lieutenant Ral to come closer. "Alright, both of you... the Skipper's gonna want some ideas on how we can track down the remainder of those Breen fighters. Talk to your teams and see what you can come up with. You have thirty minutes to put something together - and I'll take the best ideas to the Boss... Now go!"
