[Mission Day 01 - 1440 Hours]

While in the Delta Quadrant, there had been a few instances where the Apollo had needed to lash out with its advanced phasers; though compact, the Rhode Island-class scout had the teeth of a much larger starship, as she was meant to be able to effectively scout out hostile areas and live to tell the tale. Now, her weapons and finely-tuned sensors were focused on routing out the remains of the Breen raiding party that had left Starbase 38 and the USS Seleya in flames, along with the destruction of the starships Hephaestion (thankfully empty) and Shahid with all 157 hands, not to mention the death of Vice Admiral Jonathan Knox.

"Stand down red alert. Resume course. Warp Nine," Gaudain said, standing up from his seat on the bridge. Lights around the periphery of the room changed from red to white, briefly returning them to a sense of normality despite the remains of a lone Breen fighter crumbling and melting on the viewscreen before the bridge crew, one of a dozen that they'd managed to track down on their patrol. "Commander, you have the bridge. I'll be in my ready room," he said, barely waiting for a response before leaving the bridge. He crossed the corridor to the ready room and locked the door behind him, still seething from the short but decisive battle.

Gaudain was no stranger to combat or strife; he was used to things blowing up around him, but he never in his wildest dreams could have imagined the sense of sheer rage he had felt on the death of Admiral Knox. Like his mentor, S'Tal, the admiral had been one of the many benefactors who had inexplicably seen something in him during his Starfleet career, nominating him for the executive officer role on the Galaxy and then the command of the Apollo itself. He was a good man and died sacrificing himself to destroy a Breen dreadnought that was threatening the lives of thousands of Federation civilians and his fellow Starfleet officers.

He also wasn't expecting to react so viscerally to being re-assigned from exploratory duties to take on this tactical mission, but there was nothing to help that: the Apollo was absolutely the right ship for the job. They needed to account for every single Breen fighter that had escaped the battle, and figure out where they were coming from, either a mothership or the path they were taking through the Ionite Nebula.

The captain stood in front of his desk and rested his palms on its surface for a moment; they had been out there for two days, hunting down fighters one by one, but there had to be a more efficient way of handling it.

"Gaudain to all Senior Staff. I want a meeting in one hour with solutions on how to track these Breen down. Make it happen," he said, before spinning the monitor around to see if he could find anything himself.
