Post 25 - Medical Procedures

Posted on Mon Feb 10th, 2020 @ 12:20am by Ensign Theo McDonnell RN & Commander Roy Tanner

Mission: Episode 0 - War Games
Location: Deck 02 - Sickbay
Timeline: Mission Day 03 - 0915 Hours

Everyone was busy getting things set up, ready for the mission. Theo was just about to finish cataloguing and preparing all of the routine medications when he heard the door swish open.

"Hey," said Tanner as he spotted the young dark-haired ensign holding a PADD. "Roy Tanner. I'm the new Chief Engineer," he introduced himself as he crossed the compartment.

Seeing the man walking over to him, Theo held out his hand and said "I'm Theo McDonnell, Nurse. How can I help?" with a smile on his face.

Shaking the man's hand warmly, Tanner moved to the nearest bio bed, hopped up onto it and began to unfasten his uniform tunic. "Well, I've just come aboard - just been reactivated actually - and unless Starfleet have changed standing orders in the last ten years, I need a medical and a clean bill of health from ya before I can do any work." He smiled at the younger man. "Hope I wasn't interrupting anything too important?"

Grabbing a Tricorder on his way over to the bed, Theo said "Of course, one standard medical, coming up" before he started to activate the bio bed to take general obs while he scanned the man in front of him. "And no, nothing, important, just cataloguing the medications to know what our stock levels are before i assemble the trauma kits, and so we know what we have to use in case of power issues"

As he checked the man's obs, his tricorder began beeping "Hmm." "I'm seeing a lot of scar tissue built up around the joints on both of your hands. Have you been having any difficulties with anything lately?" as he looked at the man's hands, theo began taking more detailed scans.

"No more than normal. I've spent my whole life working with my hands." He looked at the nurse with mild concern. "Anything I should be worried about, Doc?"

Looking more closely at the tricorder, and feeling the concern coming off the more senior man in waves, Theo finally said "No, nothing too serious, the build up is most likely from small scrapes and knocks over the years causing scar tissue to accumulate. I do see a very small amount of arthritis, but all in all, it's nothing that a treatment with an osteogenic stimulator and a dermal regenerator can't treat" Theo began smiling at Roy to try and reassure him.

"I'm 64 years old Doc. If that's the only thing wrong with me, I'll take that." Tanner flexed the fingers in both hands. "You can do it now?"

"Of course, although, after the treatment it might be a good idea to take an inflammatory once a day for the next week or so. I'll get the doctor to prescribe one." Theo said as he walked over and grabbed the osteogenic stimulator. Wheeling it over, Theo gently took Roy's hand. "Shall we get started?"

Tanner nodded brusquely. "Go ahead." He watched the young man work for several seconds. "So why decide to be a nurse rather than a doctor? I see you're a commissioned officer..." He smiled apologetically. "To be honest, I don't even know what the difference is..."

Moving the Machine over his joints, chuckling at Roy's question, Theo thought for a second before answering. "I wanted to be a nurse, because, well, my dad was a doctor and growing up, all I saw him do was cut and run, literally, he would do surgery and never see them again. I saw the nurses take care of his patients, spend time with them, wash them, care for them, and from the moment I felt the comfort they gave to their patients, I just knew this was for me." Swapping to Roy's other hand, Theo continued, "As for the difference between a nurse and doctor, a doctor is the one that decides that you get a drug, but a nurse is the one who decides when." With that, Theo got a mischievous grin on his face.

Clenching both fists as Ensign McDonnell finished his work. "Feels good Doc. Thanks." He slipped off the bio bed and reached for his tunic. "I owe you a beer. Do we even have a bar on this boat?"

Theo started to correct Roy before, he just smirked and said "Mine's a manhattan if you're buying, and, i'll hold you to it" pointing at the older man.

"Would you believe me if I told you I didn't even know what a manhattan was?" Tanner asked mildly, wondering when the last time might have been that a newly-minted ensign had pointed a finger at him. he shrugged into his tunic and touched his index finger to his brow in a casual salute.

"Thanks for this Doc. See you around."

"I'm not a-" theo started before before he could finish, the doors had swished closed and he was alone once again.
